Jigga Rhapsody Commecial!

WOW
SO
DOPE

spotted at the midnightfix

I was wrong

The Blueprint 3 slated to drop tomorrow, is actually quite good. I do think i was right to harbour skepticism. The first couple singles and leaks were not exactly the fire i was hoping for. Take "Run This Town" which is a few minutes too long for my liking. DOA the original street single wasn't exactly a full strength effort either. Jay-z might be taking some knocks for hating on the auto-tune or whatever but i don't think its scathing or personal. He just wants rappers to step up, lyric to lyric. So that was DOA, while Run This Town was an assertion that rap was a two headed monster and to be frank, Kanye kind of helt it down. Timbaland who had in the past brought Jigga some of his bigger anthems kind of regressed on this one but thats pretty much where the negativity ends. The rest of the effort is pretty nice. 7/10 and that puts it right behind American Gangster in my top 5 Jigga albums 1995 to whatever.

Jay-Z - A Star is Born ft. J. Cole

This one is about how everybody got their start somewhere, somehow, and it's a little launching pad for the Nation's first signee, J. Cole, a rapper that curiously waited for Jigga outside of his studio to hand him his demo tape a couple years ago. Every dog has his day.

Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind ft. Alicia Keys

This is that New York Anthem not quite as gritty as one would think an hommage to the rotten apple would be, but this one glorifies rather than pits itself on crime and poverty. Manhattan Alicia Keys approprietly sings the hook. " I make the yankee fitted more famous than a yankee can".

Jay-Z - On to the Next One ft. Swizz Beats

"Niggas like my old shit, buy my old albums". If i can get anything from this song, it's that Jay isn't done just yet. He links up with Swizz once again who samples Justice's D.A.N.C.E if only tacitly.

Jay-Z - Real As It Gets ft. Young Jeezy

One of those rap songs that aims to be epicly uplifting. The snowman comes nice again but it's 2009 and we expect that much. When Jigga is in the building it's no longer recession rap folks.

Fires Reach Athens..Again

Scenes evoking images of similar events in 2007.

I hold stories linked to Greece kind of dear because of the family I've got living inside and on the skirts of the metropolis. Last years riots in Athens put things at a standstill for weeks and the wildfire coupled with constant political distress can't be easy for my cousins and uncles. The Military is now involved and they've got airtankers dropping water all over the place. The one problem is that there is little to no coordination between the military, firefighters or local government. What is most trifling is that I'd bet my last drachma that this is the work of arsonists. Arsonists that are working in tandem with a decade of drought oh would it just rainnnn.

Bodymore and Backk..

A couple weeks ago my friend an I embarked on a road trip of sorts in the upper crust of the east-coast. I wanted to share my experiences in scrapbook steeelo but my friend is sitting on the photographical evidence that would make our exploits all that more believable. We endured the trip on ginseng and fast food. When we grew tired of our ipod plug-ins we tuned into local urban radio and made a faultless effort to chit chat. And to be frank, i picked the right duder to pull this trip off with because we didn't clash or anything close to that. So heres to experiences that shaped our livelyhood because we could have just as easily gone to Cancun and figured that much.

Stopping in Baltimore I went to the 2nd Annual My Crew Be Unruly event at the Paradox in Baltimore where i linked up with Larrikin who had initially put me onto club music a year and a half ago. Here is a mix he put together while studying a broad this summer.

#3

The 3rd album that I thoroughly enjoyed in 2009 is...

Lee Fields & The Expressions - My World

"DONT CALL IT A COMEBACK I BEEN HERE FOR YEARS"
Lee fields brings it back to Cooley High and he actually was there to prove it.
After somewhat of a hiatus which we will call the 80's, Lee Fields has re-emerged. My favourite cut on this one is Ladies:the admissible ode to cat calling and girl watching, something Montreal Summers can/not humble.

Lee Fields & The Expressions - Honey Dove

Lee Fields & The Expressions - Ladies

Lee Fields & The Expressions - Do You Love Me (Like You Say You Do)

BONUS++

Esther Williams - Last Night Changed It All

Who's Real, Who's Not ?

Jadakiss - Who's Real (ft. Swizzie + OJ Da Juiceman)

PIMP C: "TRILL NIGGZ DON'T DIE"

A Lack of Solidarity..

I have learned to channel my negative energy into productivity in times of relative incoherence.

This might sound pointless and over the top but it got me through a week where I was unhappy at times for no apparent reason. :)

And somebody needs to remind me to pay that Visa bill.
I'm not getting that Countach on bad credit...

Megan Fox wants to hear I Love You and I'm not about to make her wait.
After seeing transformers the echoes of the jazz fest sound system made it seem like I was still trapped in the movie. The God of Grape and his sidekick Blueberry Blunt Paper had already exposed my vulnerabilities and I wasn't about to put up a fight against Decepticons let alone public security. Replace Tyrese Gibson with Morris Chesnutt and the movie would have peaked beyond belief, The opening sequence was worth 30 dorra$ atleast. YADDAMEAN

This month i been feeling this old time organist Charles Earland. Word to Cam at Steve's, The Hammond B3 is mean machine. If only Ray Manzarek had joined the darkside, The Doors would have had a fuller sound, but who am I to defecate on The Doors and their UNFUCKWITTABLE catalogue.
Heres some of his work.

Charles Earland - Betty's Theme (Dynamite Brothers Soundtrack 1974)

Charles Earland - I Was Made To Love Her

Charles Earland - Murilley

Like that Ethiopan Chick once said I've Got real Hootspa!

STALAGGGGGGGG

I still don't know how i'm going to manage but this week is..

The 2009 Montreal International Reggae Festival on the 26th, 27th and 28th

26th

Frankie Paul will headline the first night as U-Roy and Yellowman's former sparring partner Charlie Chaplin will close out what is being labelled Sound System Night. special appearance by the west island's own Danny Rebel and the KGB***

27th

Dancehall Night is ticketed at 50 dollars but it could be one of the rare opportunities to catch the fireman Capleton in Montreal. Check for Anthony B as well...this night might entice me to grab the weekend pass.

28th

The last night works as a tribute to rocksteady legend Alton Ellis. Sugar Minott is here, and we all know he charted well in the 80's. A personal favourite will also flatline as Sanchez will perform his signature Lovers Rock. Ky-Mani Marley will close out the weekend but one could expect a soundclash on the final night word to U-Roy...

if that isn't enough. Collie Buddz will be at Cafe Campus on the 27th as well. but thats not enough to redirect me unfortunately. My aim is true.

And this all goes down at Parc Jean Drapeau next to LARONDE

so spend your money on this and skim over Osheaga cuz we all know thats a rubbish festival.

and with Stevie Wonder and Kool & the Gang coming through the week after you'll have decisions to make. Hopefully i've put things in perspective.

Sanchez - Chronic

Rodney P ft. Ky-Mani Marley - The Nice Up

Capleton - High Grade

Now we just gotta get Shomari to pick up the fiddle again..

AYO, I GOT THIS!!!

The Matron might have found his maiden.
Time is like Motrin, the Slew is a process for non-believers
But i chose to ride pine when others took jumpers
I passed on candy apples when trophies were waiting in the wings.
And look at me now.

Shuggie Otis - Strawberry Letter 23
